Frequently Asked Questions Q: What's a personal domain name?
A: A domain name is a pointer to a particular place on the Internet. A personal domain name is one that points to your Internet resources. A personal domain name looks like your.name.gb.com.
Q: What's my e-mail address?
A: Your email address will be firstname.surname@gb.com - your identity reflected accurately in your email address for the first time. This facility is included in the £15.00 per year (plus VAT) price.
Q: What's a web page address?
A: A web page address is a domain name, usually with "www" on the front, that which points to a web page. Your @GB personal page will have an address like www.firstname.surname.gb.com. Once this page has been set up anyone anywhere in the world with Internet connection can type in this address and see your site.
Q: What's the http:// on the front of a web address?
A: This is the definition of what service you are using on the web. If you don't type it your web browser usually puts it in itself. The full address of your web page is really http://www.firstname.surname.gb.com/.
Q: What can I do with my web page?
A: Your @GB domain is a fully fledged Internet domain and with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) your domain name can point to any site you wish. The @GB wizard allows you to build personal pages where you can put information about yourself together with a photograph and links to your favourite Internet pages and resources in one place. You can also redirect your @GB site to your existing website.
Q: Why might I want to have an Internet Service Provider?
A: Having a domain name lets you build major web sites and use many other Internet resources. You can run a whole business from a web site. If you need bigger resources than the @GB personal page your domain can point to an ISP who can provide a hosting package for you.
Q: I don't have a digital camera or scanner - how can I put a photograph on my personal website?
A: There are a number of ways. You can send a photograph by post, with your name and website address clearly marked on the back to:
@GB Photographs
163 New King's Road
London, SW6 4SN
(enclose an S.A.E. if you want the photograph returned) and @GB will do this for you. We will scan the photo and e-mail the result back to you so you can verify it is the correct image that you want.
Alternatively you can go to one of the many PhotoMe booths located around the country which take digital photographs. These booths also provide a facility to forward the photograph by e-mail. Please forward it to photos@gb.com with your name in the subject line.
Q: Can I put literally anything on to my site? What if I wanted to put up a photo gallery?
A: For security reasons we restrict the content we allow on the homepage system. However you can use something called BBCode to put formatting onto your page. You will find more information about this in the User Login area.
We eventually plan to provide a wide range of services for our homepage users. We will be introducing these features as soon as we can. Look out for the following soon:
Photo Gallery
Guestbook
SMS service (people use a form on your page, and you get a text message)
Password-protected pages
CV builder and storage
PGP key repository and tools
An online counter for your SETI@Home account
Q: What do I do if I haven't got an existing-e-email address?
If you don't already have an existing e-mail address there are a number of ISPs you can sign up with to get one, or you can use any one of hundreds of free web-based e-mail providers. However, you might want to pick one that will let you specify a different "reply to" address so that you can make full use of your @GB address.
Q: If I have an @GB.com email address can I use my old one?
Yes, your old address will continue to work, you won't lose any e-mail. When you start sending out e-mail with your @GB address the "From" header your friends will automatically use that address when they reply so there's no need even to announce your change of address - it will happen automatically.

In almost all activities, the information we collect is non-personal (such as first name, age, city and state). If you enter a contest, send us a question or send an electronic postcard, we will also ask for an e-mail address. We only collect enough information from our visitors to make activities on PBS Kids fun and interesting.
If you submit stories, artwork, comments or anything else to us which is posted on our site, you will be identified on our site only by first name, age, city and state.
If you send us an e-mail with a question or comment, or enter one of our contests, we will write back using your e-mail address, but we will not keep the address or use it again.
If you ask PBS Kids to send an electronic postcard or e-mail message, we will ask for your first name and e-mail address as well as the e-mail address of the person who will receive the postcard. We will only use this information to send the postcard or message and we will delete the information when the postcard or message is sent.
No one will be excluded from our site for not giving us personal information. When we do ask for personal information (like an e-mail address), we will only keep it until that particular activity is complete. We will not share this information with a third party.
If we know a visitor is under the age of thirteen, we will collect a parent's permission offline (by postal mail, fax or phone) before we mail any prizes, or collect or share personal information with anyone else.
If you localize pbskids.org to the PBS station nearest you, a cookie will tell us your station's call letters. PBS Kids only keeps track of how many computers choose each station. No personal information is stored in the cookie, even if you have entered your name or e-mail address on other parts of PBS Online. You can choose to have your computer remember a different station, or no station at all, at any time. Please note that if you come to pbskids.org from a local station site, you will be automatically localized to that station.
We also promise to help families and communities find the information they need to use the Internet safely and responsibly.
When a PBS Kids site is partially funded by outside sponsors, we will mark any underwriter logos with a "sponsored by" tag. We choose our underwriters carefully, to make sure that the company's products and services fit PBS standards. PBS Kids sites will not contain advertisements promoting e-commerce or direct links to e-commerce.
All links to third party sites are insulated with a PBS Kids bridge page. These pages clearly notify the visitor that he or she is leaving PBS Kids, and offers an opportunity to return to PBS Kids. Each bridge page displays a Web literacy tip, educating visitors how to be safe on the Internet. In the case of a sponsor's link, the bridge page will provide more information about the sponsor's relationship to PBS. Since we cannot be assured that links to outside sites follow our safety or privacy guidelines, we encourage families to discuss these choices together. We are not responsible for the content or safety and privacy practices at any sites linked from our pages.
With areas of our site like "Get Your Web License," and our "Know Before You Go" Web literacy tips, we will continue to empower our visitors by helping them to make informed choices.
Your family's use of this site is conditioned on your having accepted these terms. You should check back to this policy frequently, since it is subject to change from time to time, and your continued use of the site is conditioned upon your acceptance of any modifications hereto.
We want to make this site a place where families can surf together, and where parents and caregivers are happy to have their children interact, learn and play. If you have any comments or questions, we're happy to hear them. This is, after all, your site.
